The present application relates to a device and method for processing a digital value to thereby determine an estimate of the square of said digital value. This is done by linearly approximating the square function with the help of anchor points that are powers of 2 such that the estimate of the , square of a digital value xa is determined on the basis of a first processing value 2i, where 2i <=xa ~2i+1, and a second processing value (3xa - 2i+1). The present invention is advantageous in that it allows simple processing steps and a simple processing hardware. It is preferably applied to the mean signal power estimation of a digital signal being sent to a transmitter.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 3, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 3, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 3, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
