A programmed computer is used to create a digital model of an individual component of a patient's dentition. The computer obtains a 3D digital model of the patient's dentition, identifies points (766) in the dentition model that lie on an inter-proximal margin between adjacent teeth in the patient's dentition, and uses the identified points to create a cutting surface (782) that separates portions of the dentition model representing the adjacent teeth.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 8, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 8, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 8, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
