Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and system for performing optional or selective forward error correction (FEC) on data within the data link layer before the data is transmitted. First, a determination is made as to what data in the data link layer requires to be FEC encoded (40). Next the data link layer data , determined to require FEC encoding is protected by FEC and the remaining data link layer data is not FEC protected (44). A data application or any network protocol layer above the data link layer determines the portions required to be FEC encoded (48).

Why it's free to use

  • Filed September 10, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended September 10, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 10, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
