Abstract From the Canadian patent

An internal combustion engine is provided with an expansion cylinder (10) and at least one combustion cylinder (20), preferably two or four combustion cylinders per expansion cylinder. An air-fuel mixture is ignited within the combustion cylinders to drive a combustion piston (13) which in turn, drives , an engine crankshaft (38). The gaseous products of combustion are exhausted at a pressure substantially above atmospheric to an expansion cylinder wherein they are allowed to further expand against an expander piston (28) to drive an expander crankshaft (40). Torque produced at the engine crankshaft and torque produced at the expander crankshaft are combined to drive vehicle wheels.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 25, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 25, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 25, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
