The signal in each channel of a stereo is modulated at an inaudible frequency by a replica of the original signal. The modulated signal is broadcast into a room by a loudspeaker (48) and is picked up by a microphone (41). The microphone is coupled to the stereo, which includes a demodulator (51) for separating the replica from the signal as received at the microphone. By comparing (56, 66) the replica with the original signal data is extracted to , compensate for the acoustic characteristics of the loudspeaker and the room in which the loudspeaker is located.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 29, 1999 and granted October 16, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 29, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 29, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
