An integrated optical waveguide (2) with an end face (2A) the end face (2A) , being provided on an end portion with a greater width than the waveguide (2) e.g. in the form of a T-bar (2B) provided at the end of the waveguide (2) whereby the rounding effect produced by the manufacturing process e.g. , etching, used to form the end face (2A) does not affect the flatness of the portion of the end face (2A) through which the majority of light is transmitted. The T-bar (2B) is preferably inclined so the normal of the end face (2A) is inclined to the optical axis of the waveguide (2) to reduce back reflection therefrom. A plurality of waveguides (6 7, 8) may terminate in a , common T-bar (6B).

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 26, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended April 26, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 26, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
