Abstract From the Canadian patent

The invention relates to a self-heating disposable heating pack (1) utilizing an exothermic chemical reaction. Self-moderation of the heat pack is provided through the use of a preformed reversibly stiffened gel that alters the rate of exothermic chemical reactions. A vaporizable solvent is used to adjust the gel stiffness. The heat pack can be used in heat transfer or ambient temperature conditions which differ from those anticipated as design conditions.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 21, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended May 21, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 21, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
