The present invention typically involves the use of a compressed blocking area (34) to assist in sealing a filter element (21a) and avoiding channeling in a wound fibrous tissue filtering system. It may involve the use of multiple spaced, interstitial rings. It may involve the intentional wasting of a portion of the filter element to create a compressed blocking area (34). It may also involve the use of different heights of the rings and may include the use of compression and secondary tapers (40) on the rings. The heights and spacing of the rings with respect to the other ring or rings may vary in a certain ratio.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 20, 1999 and granted February 18, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 20, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 20, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
