Abstract From the Canadian patent

The instant invention discloses utilization of a cDNA clone to construct sense and antisense genes for inhibition of starch synthase enzymatic activity in corn. More specifically, this invention concerns a method of controlling the starch fine structure of starch derived from the grain of cereal crops comprising: (1) preparing a chimeric gene comprising a nucleic acid fragment encoding a starch synthase structural gene or a fragment thereof operably , linked in either sense or antisense orientation on the upstream side to a nucleic acid fragment encoding a promoter that directs gene expression in corn endosperm tissue, and operably linked on the downstream side to a nucleic acid …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 26, 1999 and granted January 3, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 26, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 26, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
