Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method for preparing a lens having UV-absorbing properties involves charging to a mold a monomer mixture comprising lens-forming monomers and an essentially non-UV-absorbing compound; exposing the monomer mixture in the mold to a light source including ultraviolet light to cure the monomer mixture and form the lens, whereby the non-UV-absorbing compound converts to a UVabsorbing agent.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed April 12, 1999 and granted July 1, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 12, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 12, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
