Abstract From the Canadian patent

Methods and compositions for the expression of transgenes in monocot plants including maize are disclosed. In the invention gene silencing is avoided by , use of monocot-homeologous sequences from plants of the genus Coix for transformation. Included in these transgene sequences are Coix promoters enhancers, coding sequences and terminators. Suitable alternatives to maizederived transgenes are desirable for expression in maize in that homologybased gene silencing can limit or effectively eliminate transgene expression.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed May 14, 1999 and granted December 11, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 14, 2019.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 14, 2021.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
