A method of concentrating a disease-related conformation of a protein such as the PrPSc in a sample is disclosed. The method comprises liquefying the sample and adding a complexing agent such as phosphotungstic acid (PTA) which complexes preferentially or exclusively with the PrPSc. After the complex is formed the composition is centrifuged until the complex settles at the bottom. Thereafter, the supernatant is poured away. The remaining pellet may be suspended in an aqueous solution containing a protease inhibitor for storage. The PTA stains the PrPSc making the resulting concentrated PrPSc susceptible to further analysis, making it possible to quickly and efficiently determine …

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 4, 1999. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended February 4, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 4, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
