A method of producing nootkatone by laccase catalyzed oxidation of valencene. Valencene and a composition having laccase activity are reacted in the presence of an oxygen source, at a valencene concentration greater than 0.1 %, to form valencene hydroperoxide. Optionally a mediator and/or a, solvent at a concentration that maintains lactase activity may also be included. The valencene hydroperoxide is degraded to form nootkatone and nootkatone, is then recovered. The method produces nootkatone in commercially viable yields.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 7, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended September 7, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 7, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
