An improved system for transmitting audio signals in a TV stream employs an adaptive gain system. The system provides for sampling the audio signal in each of, successive intervals in between 256 (2 8) and 65,535 (2 16) steps for , determining a reference, voltage (i.e. maximum or mean,..) amplitude for the interval for dividing the , signal into 256, steps for providing a scaling factor for each of the steps which is a direct function of the, reference voltage, and for transmitting the audio signal (interval) along with a code, representative of the scaling factor to permit a receiver to faithfully reproduce the signal.

Why it's free to use
- Filed March 3, 2000. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended March 3, 2020.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by March 3, 2022.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
