A cartridge device for processing a sample mounted on a surface of or entrapped within the matrix of a support member and comprising a housing having a cavity therein and an aperture providing access for the introduction of said support member into said cavity so as to define two compartments when said support member is inserted therein one of which compartments (called the first one) being defined by the sample bearing surface of the support member an inner surface of the cavity and spacing means therebetween of such size form and configuration that the dimension of said first compartment perpendicular to the sample bearing surface of the support member and the said inner surface of …
