Astrocytes protect neurons from excitotoxic injury by maintaining low extracellular glutamate concentrations (Gluo). Compromised astrocytic glutamate uptake has been implicated in acute and chronic neuroligical conditions including Parkinson's disease. This invention provides evidence that Gluo is modulated in a feed-back manner through activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), particularly group II mGluRs. Furthermore ACPD effects , were mimicked by glutamate suggesting that astrocytic glutamate transport is dynamically regulated with mGluRs acting as sensors for changes in Glu. Consequently, agonists of mGluR receptors are potent drugs to modulate extracellular …

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 18, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended December 18, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 18, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
