This invention relates to a method of preparing and purifying gemdihaloalkanes in high yield and with minimal decomposition. The preparation consists essentially of halogenating a ketone with a halogenating agent and then purifying the resulting gem-dihaloalkane by vacuum distillation from the reaction mixture. In one preferred embodiment 1,1-dichloro-1-, cyclopropylethane is prepared and purified in good yield. Certain gemdihaloalkanes are used as intermediates for the synthesis of novel HIV reverse transcription inhibitors.

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 12, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended August 12, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 12, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
