Methods for identifying inducers and inhibitors of programmed cell death in a cell-free system are described. The methods exploit the finding that programmed cell death is accompanied by shutdown of cellular protein synthesis and by phosphorylation of eIF-2.alpha. and that the dephosphorylation of eIF- 2.alpha. prevents the shutdown of protein synthesis.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 30, 1998 and granted December 23, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 30, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 30, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
