An airbag inflator (20) includes a pair of telescoping pistons (28 52) , slidingly mounted within a housing (22). Pressurization of a combustion chamber (50) by a pyrotechnic initiator (38) acts on one piston to pressurize a hydraulic fluid chamber (58), which, in turn acts on the other piston to , pressurize a liquid propellant reservoir (54). Liquid propellant can then be regeneratively pumped from the reservoir into the combustion chamber for combustion to generate an airbag inflation gas. A hydraulic fluid damping chamber (62) is utilized to exert a controllable retarding force on the one piston, such as to control the rate of airbag inflation gas generation.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 2, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended February 2, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 2, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
