Oxidation of liquid ethanol in the presence of excess liquid ethanol and a supported oxidation catalyst provides a one step process for production of ethyl acetate. The acetic acid produced in the oxidation is absorbed by the excess liquid ethanol, which esterifies to ethyl acetate. Ethyl acetate and water is removed from the process for separation of the ethyl acetate. The oxidation portion of process is preferred with a metallic oxidation catalyst on a hydrophobic support and the esterification portion with an acidic solid ion exchange resin to promote the esterification. Why it's free to use
- Filed November 7, 1997 and granted June 10, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended November 7, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 7, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
