There is provided an autoclave (10) having a door (12) hingedly connected (at 13) to a vessel portion (11). A catch member (34) is provided for locking the door and the vessel portion, the catch member being biassed by spring (38) towards a locking position. The catch member is movable preferably using a , solenoid (36), out of said locking position.
