Abstract From the Canadian patent

There is disclosed a method for forming a leader and a tail in a web of a papermaking machine that utilizes a water jet cutting apparatus having a nozzle.mounted for movement along a beam that extends transversally across the width of the web. The method includes the step of initially positioning the, water jet nozzle at one end of the beam outside of the first edge and activating the nozzle to spray a liquid jet from the nozzle. Thereafter a , leader, is formed in the web by moving the nozzle from the initial position to a predetermined position within the outside edge of the web at a chosen speed relative to the web travel speed.
