A multilevel coded modulation scheme is provided in which a first portion of input data is encoded by a first-level code and a second portion of input data is encoded by a second-level code, the second-level code being such that the overall multilevel code exhibits a desired level of time diversity of at least 2 and the minimum distance of the overall code is not increased by virtue of the presence of the second-level code.

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 11, 1998 and granted January 28, 2003. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 11, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 11, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
