Betaine is produced by the oxidation of a choline salt in the presence of a supported noble metal catalyst at temperatures from about 20~C to 100~C and pressures, from atmospheric to about 100 psi. This process is advantageous over prior processes, for the production of betaine in that no amine halocarboxylate contaminants are, produced by this reaction.

Why it's free to use
- Filed January 25, 1999 and granted March 26, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended January 25, 2019.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by January 25, 2021.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
