Abstract From the Canadian patent

An apparatus for engagement of cylindrical member (7) about the outside diameter, so that downhole tools may be positioned longitudinally along said cylindrical member. A generally cylindrical outer ring (1) is detachably engaged with a generally cylindrical inner ring (2). Once the inner ring (2) is detached from the outer ring (1) it is automatically present into position by a spring clamping force exerted between the pipe (7) and inner ring. Relative axial motion of the outer ring (1) with respect to the inner ring (2) automatically energizes the inner ring inward providing the high clamping force required to set the self energizing stop collar in its final position.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 20, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 20, 2017.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 20, 2019.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
