In the method of the invention, in vitro proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is employed to determine the measurable ethanol concentration in ethanol-treated erythrocyte and plasma samples of occasional and heavy drinkers. An erythrocyte to plasma ethanol concentration ratio (102- 122) is determined based upon the MRS measured erythrocyte concentration. Erythrocyte to plasma ethanol concentration ratios are greater for heavy drinkers (a subset of alcohol tolerant individuals) as compared to the ratios for occasional drinkers (non-tolerant individuals) when erythrocyte ethanol concentration is determined by MRS. The method of the present invention discriminates between …

Why it's free to use
- Filed June 13, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended June 13, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 13, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
