The present process permits a method of determining the species of a sample of wood based on the measured "pH" value of the extractives in the sample. The measured, values are then adjusted for better accuracy by compensating them with the temperature, and moisture level of the sample. The extractives contained in the sample are drawn to, the surface with a spray/blast of distilled H2O very close to the vaporizing , temperature. This spray/blast may also contain an agent to accelerate the extraction process. The spray, or solution may or may not be required to be heated or may not be required at all with, certain pH sampling devices.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 17, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 17, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 17, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
