A stepped transformer has its winding switched to maintain a constant voltage at the secondary side by connecting parts of the primary together and with a winding part which can be energized in an opposite direction to the other winding parts on the primary side. An array of switches which are individually controllable serves to connect the winding of parts in combinations with each other for the voltage regulation.

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 28, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended October 28, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 28, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
