In order to accommodate a labyrinth seal whose diameter is too large to form a gas passage using conventional techniques, the labyrinth seal is made in two parts. A first part is an inner ring whose outer diameter is sufficiently small so as to permit the forming of a passage therein with conventional techniques. The second part is anouter ring which can then be fastened to the inner ring so as to then extend incombination, to the radial extent necessary to complete the sealing engagement with an adjacent element. The outer and inner rings are preferably interconnected by way of an interference fit.

Why it's free to use
- Filed September 29, 1998 and granted September 4, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 29, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 29, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
