Abstract From the Canadian patent

A spoken dialog system is constructed to sufficiently understand a user's response to the openended prompt 'How may I help you?' in order to route a caller to an appropriate destination, with subsequent processing for information retrieval or call/task completion. In this invention the relationships among the call types are structured into an inheritance hierarchy. Then a dialog manager exploits this hierarchy and the output of a spoken language understanding module to generate a set of semantically consistent task objectives.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed September 24, 1998 and granted February 12, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 24, 2018.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 24, 2020.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
