A compressor protection apparatus and a method for controlling a compressor protection apparatus that prevents unnecessarily frequent on/off cycling of the electromagnetic clutch and, at the same time prevents catastrophic damage of the, compressor due to leakage of the refrigerant are disclosed. In this control method, if a state of high engine rotational frequency has lasted for a certain duration the electromagnetic, clutch will be switched off temporarily. The control method takes into account the duration of high or normal engine rotational frequency and thus prevents unnecessarily frequent on/off cycling of the electromagnetic clutch.
