Process to prepare .epsilon.-caprolactam starting from a liquid aqueous mixture containing an alcohol and 6-aminocaproic acid by cyclization of 6aminocaproic acid in the aqueous mixture at an elevated temperature. The alcohol is separated from the starting aqueous mixture before performing the cyclization to such extent that the concentration of alcohol in the aqueous mixture during the cyclization is less than 1 wt.%. The advantages include reduced amounts of undesirable by-product.

Why it's free to use
- Filed February 12, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended February 12, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by February 12, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
