Abstract From the Canadian patent

An optical transmission system comprises means for modulating the optical output of a laser of an optical amplifier module with a transmitted dither; means for measuring an incoming optical signal of the optical amplifier module for detecting a received dither; and means for processing the received dither and said transmitted dither for determining the ratio of the energy in the received dither to the energy in the transmitted dither. When the optical transmission system has a plurality of optical amplifiers the optical output , of each optical amplifier is modulated with a respective transmitted dither which is uncorrelated to the dithers transmitted by the other optical amplifiers …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 31, 1996 and granted October 9, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 31, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 31, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
