An electrochemical battery cell has at least one plate set each plate set, including an anode, a cathode and a separator between the anode and the cathode. The separator is formed by spraying a porous layer of a ceramic separator material, such as zirconium oxide onto the anode, the cathode, or, both. Spraying of the porous ceramic separator layer is preferably accomplished by plasma spraying. The porous separator layer is the thereafter saturated with an electrolyte. For most practical applications a number of the, plate sets are placed into a sealed housing with external leads.

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 12, 1998. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended May 12, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 12, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
