An optical fiber 10 is disclosed that is suitable for use in wave-division-multiplex (WDM) systems 700 served by Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers 710. The fiber has a chromatic dispersion whose absolute magnitude is at least 0.8 ps/(nm-km) over the wavelength region 1530 - 1565 nm and has a dispersion slopethat is less than 0.05 ps/(nm2-km). This optical fiber exhibits a loss that is less than about 0.20 dB/km and is relatively insensitive to bending; moreover its effective, area exceeds 50 µm2. The optical fiber includes a core of transparent material having a maximum refractive index n1, and a layer of transparent cladding material on the outer surface of said core having a refractive index …

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 11, 1998 and granted December 7, 1999. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 11, 2018.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 11, 2020.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
