Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method for isolating succinic acid producing bacteria is provided comprising increasing the biomass of an organism which lacks the ability of catabolize pyruvate, and then subjecting the biomass to glucose-rich medium in an anaerobic environment to enable pyruvate-catabolizing mutants to grow. The invention also provides for a mutant that produces high amounts of succinic acid, which has been derived from a parent which lacked the genes for pyruvate formate lyase and lactate dehydrogenase and which belongs to the E.coli Group of Bacteria.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 31, 1996 and granted February 7, 2012. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 31, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 31, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
