The transmission of digital video data is accomplished using a block coding scheme, which embeds timing and control signals into the data stream. The code is DC balanced, achieved by selectively inverting some data blocks as a , function of the cumulative disparity; and the transitions within each block are controlled, providing either a minimum number of transitions per block or , a maximum, and this is achieved by selectively inverting certain bits within a block. The use of low-swing differential transmission minimizes electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Why it's free to use
- Filed October 1, 1996 and granted July 31, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 1, 2016.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 1, 2018.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
