Abstract From the Canadian patent

A system (100) for providing virtual connections through an ATM interworking multiplexer (130, 140) on a call-by-call basis. A signaling processor (160) receives signaling for a call and selects the virtual connection for the call. The signaling processor (160) generates new signaling that identifies the selection and transfers the new signaling to the ATM interworking multiplexer (130, 140) that accepted the access connection for the call. The multiplexer (130, 140) converts user information from the access connection into ATM cells for transmission over the virtual connection in accord with the new signaling.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed September 3, 1996 and granted May 21, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended September 3, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by September 3, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
