In a rolling mill, data representing the axial distance of the center of each groove of a work roll from a first reference location on the work roll is determined and stored in the memory of a data processing system. The work rolls are then mounted in the roll stand and the grooves of a selected "setup" roll pass are brought into alignment with each other.
