Abstract From the Canadian patent

Disclosed is a method for increasing the electroosmotic flow rate available for a silica surface. In the method, there is provided an electrophoretic channel which is defined by one or more silica surfaces. The surfaces) are contacted with an alkaline aqueous solution containing a solubilized silicate-monovalent metal complex in an amount effective to increase the acidity of the silica surfaces(s) as, evidenced by a reduction in the average bulk pKa of the surface(s). The achieved increase in acidity is greater than would be obtained using an otherwise identical solution lacking said silicate. In one preferred embodiment, the monovalent metal used in the solution is Li+ Na+, or K+. …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed July 10, 1996 and granted April 2, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 10, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 10, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
