Abstract From the Canadian patent

The two-way water-layer travel time, ~ is derived, from dual-mode seismic sensor data by cross-correlating the Fourier transforms of the sum and difference of the velocity and pressure signatures. The Z-transform of ~ evaluates one of the two Backus variables Zw. The second, variable is Rb, the water bottom reflectivity coefficient. The frequency-domain transforms of the above summed and differenced signatures are each multiplied by the Backus operator (1+RbZw)2 after initializing Rb and the products are iteratively cross-correlated until the correlation function converges to a minimum. Rb is perturbed after each iteration. The value of Rb upon convergence is the local water bottom …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed December 22, 1997 and granted May 9, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended December 22, 2017.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 22, 2019.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
