An optical fibre having a small numerical aperture (NA) is optically coupled with a short birefringent crystal to provide a polarization beam splitter. This arrangement obviates s the use of a GRIN lens coupled between an input optical fibre and the birefringent crystal and provides significant cost savings by allowing a short crystal to be used. In this invention the, birefringent crystal has a beam-shifting angle that is larger than the numerical aperture at the output end of the optical fibre.

Why it's free to use
- Filed November 27, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended November 27, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by November 27, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
