Currently in a wired phone network a subscriber is identified by their physical connection. In this invention a phone user will be identified to the fixed network by a Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) to provide user identification secure (encrypted) communications and global roaming in a fixed telecommunications network. The SIM is a unique identifier. In the example listed it is a smartcard containing information about the user. It could also be a finger print used in conjunction with a biometrics scanner, or any other secure device used for unique identification.

Why it's free to use
- Filed December 10, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended December 10, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by December 10, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
