A cable tie (10) includes a head (12) having an elongate passage therethrough and a strap (14) insertable into the head. The head includes a metallic barb (24) supported therein which extends into the passage for locking engagement with the strap. The barb includes a portion embedded into the head and a portion extending therefrom. A cable tie exhibiting high withdrawal or pullout strength with low strap insertion force is obtained by significantly increasing the length of the unembedded portion of the barb with respect to both the embedded portion and the thickness of the strap.

Why it's free to use
- Filed April 9, 1996 and granted January 22, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended April 9, 2016.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by April 9, 2018.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
