The invention provides hair styling gels containing a carboxylated polurethane resin, a viscosity enhancer and an, optional second hair fixative resin in an aqueous carrier. The carboxylated polyurethane resin is hydrophilic and can be solubilized in water, or in a hydroalcoholic solution in the, absence of a base. The styling gel compositions impart excellent hair styling, conditioning, and hair set retention properties to treated hair.
