A method for recovering helium from an optical fiber manufacturing process which allows recovery from most steps in the manufacturing process including, deposition and consolidation steps. The helium recovered may be refined to an intermediate level and then further refined to high purity and recycled to most steps in the manufacturing process. All recovered helium may be purified only to an intermediate level for supply to the fiber drawing step. Alternatively recovered helium may be purified to an intermediate level and recycled to the fiber drawing step while the remainder is further refined to high purity and recycled to most other steps in the manufacturing process.

Why it's free to use
- Filed July 25, 1997 and granted February 13, 2001. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended July 25, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by July 25, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
