Abstract From the Canadian patent

Finely particulate composite latices free of non-polymeric surfactants and solvents may be prepared by the radical polymerisation of mixtures of hydrophobic monomers e.g. styrene and an acrylic ester in emulsion in a solution of a low molecular weight copolymer such as a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer. Said latices have a wide variety of uses e.g. in leather processing; paints and surface coatings for wood; paints and particularly solvent-free paints for concrete cement, plaster, roof tiles and metals; overprint inks and varnishes; adhesives for floor tiling; cement and mortar admixtures; non-pigmented coatings for leather wood, metals and plastics; and paper sizing agents.

Why it's free to use

  • Filed October 18, 1996 and granted January 22, 2002. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended October 18, 2016.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by October 18, 2018.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
