Abstract From the Canadian patent

A method and apparatus for generating ultrashort optical pulses. The apparatus comprises a source for producing pulses in a first band, a compensating optical fibre, and a span of dispersion-shifted optical fibre. The compensating optical fibre receives the pulses generated by the source and has a minimum dispersion in a second band different from the first band and dispersion characteristics for compensating phase distortion due to chirp of the pulses. The dispersion-shifted optical fibre is coupled in series to the compensating optical fibre and has a dispersion minimum in the first band for adjusting the peak power level of the pulses emitted by the source to produce self-phase …

Why it's free to use

  • Filed June 27, 1997 and granted September 12, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended June 27, 2017.
  • A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by June 27, 2019.
  • We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
