Varying grooves are put into the roadway perpendicular to the movement of traffic. When the tires of a vehicle go over these grooves there will be vibrations made in the body of the vehicle. These vibrations will cause sounds within the vehicle's interior. If the grooves are properly spaced, the sounds will be recognizable.

Why it's free to use
- Filed August 22, 1997. No grant is recorded for it in Canada; had it been granted, its 20-year term would have ended August 22, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by August 22, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
