This invention relates to a process for producing acetic anhydride by the reaction of methyl acetate, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of an alkyl halide and a heterogeneous bifunctional catalyst, that contains an insoluble polymer having pendant quaternized phosphine groups some, of which phosphine groups are ionically bonded to anionic Group VIII metal complexes the remainder of the phosphine groups being bonded to iodide. In contrast to prior art processes, no accelerator (promoter) is necessary to achieve the catalytic reaction and the products are easily separated from the catalyst by filtration. The catalyst can be recycled for …

Why it's free to use
- Filed May 14, 1997 and granted September 5, 2000. A Canadian patent filed from October 1, 1989 lasts 20 years from filing, so its term ended May 14, 2017.
- A certificate of supplementary protection adds at most two years for a drug, so even that would have ended by May 14, 2019.
- We check Canadian rights only. A patent in its family in another country could still be in force: check its family on Google Patents.
